Does not swell that much. Keep ice on it (bag of frozen corn or peas or a soft gel ice pack)

just fyi.... the septum is the most painful piercing in the world lol... seriously worse than genital piercings....and your eyes will water for the rest of the day.

Make sure to only clean it with a salt water solution (they should have some H2Ocean at the shop. An infected septum is such a sensitive area to be infected.

But at least they look cool and not EVERYONE on the planet has one! :) Good luck and have fun!

EDIT: Once it is fully healed you can flip it up in your nose or take it out (my friend keeps his out for weeks at a time and it goes in fine) But that is after a good 6-8 weeks or more of healing time. Septum is not an easy one to hide during the healing process, AND you may get a lot of nose bleeds and your parents are going to think youre on coke or something if your pillow cases are covered in blood everynight lol Unless you can be honest with them, Id look at another way to be creative with your body.

Septum Piercing Swelling

I just got my septum done five days ago. It shockingly doesn't swell that bad. : ) Just don't play with it alot - and keep it clean. If the place you get it done at sells H2O ocean spray - it will be your new best friend. Wash your hands before touching it - which I haven't been doing but I'm going to start. The blood crusties should stop after the first one or two days, and I haven't had that much problem with crust in general in the past two days. It's healing quite nicely - though you can tell its kind of irritated. I remember little blood when I got it done. : ) It's probably the 2nd most painful piercing I've ever gotten - eyebrow being the worst. But it's not too bad - just extreme when it first goes through, and it feels like it's stinging afterwards for a few hours. It's my favorite piercing : ) and well worth it. Goodluck : )

I know this is super old, but the top answer is incorrect. I got my septum done two days ago, it didn't hurt, only lasted about a minute, and my eyes only watered during that minute. It's REALLY hard to get an infection in a septum piercing, as well. It's one of the quickest healing, low risk infection piercings you can get. Also, I flipped mine up the day after I got it done, just make sure you soak your nose in a sea-salt, warm water, solution before. Also, my nose didn't bleed AT ALL, it didnt bleed during the piercing, nor anytime after. The only thing the cause massive bleeding is if the piercer ****** up and went through your cartilage. (:

Last week, me and my friends decided to be complete idiots and pierce ourselves. I wanted my septum done so I did mine and I was the only one whose piercing was successful. ( i don't recommend doing it by yourself at all )

After pushing the ring finally through I noticed there was some blood but i cleaned it off with sea salt and water. The best thing to clean it is a contact cleanser as long as it contains saline in it. Anyways, since I would be murdered if my parents noticed the ring i had i was so nervous about it swelling. To my surprise there was barely any swelling and the tiny bit that was swelled is gone.

All you have to do is make sure you keep it clean and it should be fine. Plus you can flip the ring up in your nose and its completely hidden.

oh and to your additional info:

you dont even have to take it out. all you have to do is take the ring and pushh the ends of it towards the back for your nose.

im not sure how long you should keep it out for because it could take anywhere from two to eight weeks to heal and its a ***** to get a ring back in even after having it out for an hour. and to the answer above me ^ ive never had a randomly bleed from it and even if it did bleed, there wouldnt be much blood because its a 14 gage hole and its really small.

Um it will be red and sore for awhile, but the swelling won't be too bad. The swelling will be back to normal in 3-8 days. Good luck!

You brave, brave person. I'd love to get it done.

I'd say it'll swell for a least a week or so, that really depends on how good the person piercing you is.
